Overview

"Up in Smoke," a poster designed for an Information Design class, needed to communicate certain pre-determined sets of wildfire data. However, we were free to add two to three extra data sets of our choosing. Upon reading an article discussing the disproportionate impact of wildfires on Indigenous communities throughout Alberta and British Columbia, I decided I wanted to tell this story through data, spreading awareness surrounding the issue.

Problem

The main challenge I faced when creating this project was using illustration in a way that communicates the data in an accessible, easy to understand way, without coming off as lighthearted. The reality these data sets represent is a solemn one, and the stylization of the data needed to be serious, yet still engaging to the audience.

Solution

To solve this visual challenge, I used minimalist geometric shapes set in a colour palette representing smoke and flames. Not only did this colour palette effectively communicate the tone of the poster, but it also created sufficient contrast and between different categories of information. Additionally, the tone of the poster was communicated through typography, pairing a bold, roughened display type with a traditional serif typeface.
