AI and Emotional Attachment: An Advertising Case Study

Overview

"AI Loves Your Data," my final Design Capstone project, is a response to a semester's worth of research in which I asked whether emotional attachment to artificially intelligent chatbots poses more risks or benefits to society in its current state.

Problem

During the research phase of my project, I established early on through a comprehensive literature review that simulating relationships with artificial intelligence via platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Character.ai, and Replika may pose severe mental health and data privacy risks. At the end of the research phase, I decided to move into the design phase and create a public awareness campaign centred around these insights.

Solution

The goal of this campaign was to effectively encourage my target audience of North Americans aged 18 to 65 who use large language models to think critically about how they connect with and use these platforms as AI becomes more prevalent in their daily lives. The copy I developed for this campaign juxtaposes AI's ability to mimic feelings of empathy and affection with the risks associated with its use. 

This campaign included several out-of-home advertising deliverables, including a tradeshow booth to provide educational resources and information at technology-focused conferences.
